I think the complexities of the modern world require researchers to keep an open mind and bring an interdisciplinary approach to their work. For example, the consistent theme that runs through my own research is global security and insecurity, and, in particular, the role that the United States of America plays in creating these two conditions. In order to fully explore this issue, my research may range from aspects of astrophysics and computer science to politics and film. I may need to focus on the role of the media and marketing, or the philosophy behind policy decisions. I hope to encourage a similar flexibility in the thinking of sixth formers, and especially those undertaking Extended Project Qualifications.

My own research and teaching is linked together by the theme of relationships between religions and cultures both past and present, with a particular focus on Jewish Studies and Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations. I think it is important to take a multidisciplinary approach to my work as religions and cultures cannot be considered in isolation from the historical and social environment or broader society of which they are a part. In taking this approach, I work in fields such as History, Philosophy, Theology, Languages, Literature, Archaeology, Media and Politics. Ultimately, I view it as essential to demonstrate to students how the relationships between religions and cultures are relevant today, and impact on the modern world.
