Research Based Learning Project

A Research Based Learning Project (RBLP) is a ground-breaking initiative that provides students with practical experience of what it is like to learn at a research intensive Russell Group university. The RBLP utilises current research to enable groups of students to investigate and present on a multidisciplinary topic using a wide variety of primary and secondary sources. These range from government documents, literary works, technical specifications, statistics, images and photographs, letters and newspaper reports to academic texts and journals.

Students will be presented with a contentious issue delivered through a lecture. The participants will then be expected to work together in two groups, as a think-tank, using the sources provided to prepare an argument for or against the issue raised. The two groups will then present their case in competition with each other.

The multidisciplinary approach means that the project is equally suited to students of the Sciences as it is to those of the Humanities or the Arts. The RBLP is available to all students with an enquiring mind, and ideally those who have completed an Extended Project and shown a particular aptitude for the research required.

The RBLP can be a stand alone event. However, it is most effective when delivered in conjunction with other components of the Learn with US programme, which is designed as a comprehensive introduction to Higher Education. The RBLP can be delivered at your institution or hosted at the University of Southampton, and lasts for a single day. Groups can range from 10 students up to 50.
